The Scary Reason You Should Never Wear Makeup To The Beach

June 21, 2017 by Lisa Cupido

It’s summertime, the beach is calling your name, and you want to look your best — totally understandable. But piling on foundation, blush, powder, and even waterproof makeup products can actually be both bad for your skin and dangerous. Before you commit to lounging by the ocean wearing a full face of cosmetics, here are two scary reasons you should never wear makeup to the beach.

The Dangers Of Some Waterproof Makeup

Waterproof makeup seems like a great idea — why wouldn’t you want a product that won’t smear in the hot sun and after a swim? But many waterproof cosmetics products actually contain some not-so-good-for-you ingredients that help repel water: waxes, solvents, polymers, and silicones that can actually clog pores, irritate skin, and cause allergic reactions.

It should be noted that not all waterproof makeup products contain silicones and other additives. Check labels to be sure.

Opt For Water Resistant Makeup

Play it safe by shopping for water resistant makeup instead. These  products may not work as well if you’re scuba diving, but for an ordinary day at the beach, they will keep your mascara from dripping and sliding as you perspire and soak up the sun (wearing sunscreen, of course).

Less Is More On The Beach

In addition to looking fresh and natural, wearing less makeup under the hot sun is a good way to let your skin breathe and prevent clogged pores from perspiration and trapped makeup. A touch of lip gloss and groomed eyebrows can take you a long way.
