For many women over 50, thinning lips can be one of the more noticeable signs of aging. But beauty blogger Kimberly from Pretty Over 50 recently shared a step-by-step tutorial showing how mature women can achieve the appearance of fuller, plumper lips — without injections or expensive treatments.

Start with Exfoliation

Kimberly emphasizes that the first step in creating a fuller lip look is exfoliation. “Just like the rest of our face, our lips benefit from exfoliating,” she explains. Gentle exfoliation removes dry, flaky skin, making lips appear smoother and slightly plumper.

She suggests two simple methods: using a toothbrush to lightly massage the lips in small circles or applying a sugar-based lip scrub. She recommends the Honole Sugar Lip Scrub for its hydrating formula but notes that drugstore options, like ELF’s lip scrub, or DIY sugar scrubs work just as well. “Even just a few minutes of exfoliation can make a noticeable difference,” Kimberly says.

Master the Art of Lip Liner

Next, Kimberly demonstrates the power of strategic lip lining. For women over 50, she notes, the corners of the mouth can crease and cause lipstick to smudge or collect. Her trick? Overline only towards the center of the lips, stopping short of the corners.

“I line just above the natural vermilion line in the center of my lips and bring it down slightly on the bottom lip,” Kimberly explains. This subtle technique creates the illusion of a fuller lip shape while avoiding a messy or unnatural finish.

Choose the Right Lipstick and Gloss Combo

After lining, Kimberly fills in the lips with a matte lipstick — in her tutorial, she used Revlon’s Wild Thoughts — for even color coverage. She finishes with a touch of plumping gloss in the center of the lips to reflect light and enhance the appearance of volume.

“This last step really makes the lips look fuller and more youthful,” she notes, pointing out the dramatic difference in her before-and-after photos.

Final Tips

Kimberly’s approach shows that with a few strategic techniques, women over 50 can achieve a natural, plump lip look without resorting to invasive procedures. Exfoliate regularly, line strategically, and finish with the right lipstick and gloss combination.

“Taking a few minutes to focus on your lips can make a huge difference in your overall look,” she says. “It’s fun, it’s easy, and it really boosts confidence.”
