When it comes to hair care, not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal. Dr. Janine Bowring, a naturopathic doctor, is raising the alarm about some common ingredients lurking in your favorite hair products—ingredients that could be doing more harm than good.

“Here are some toxins that could be found in your shampoo,” Dr. Bowring explains. “These seven ingredients are something I really want you to be aware of and look for on your shampoo and conditioner labels.”

1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

SLS is a common detergent and foaming agent, but it can strip your hair of natural moisture. If you have a sensitive scalp, psoriasis, dandruff, or dry, itchy skin, SLS could be a major irritant, Dr. Bowring notes.

2. Urea (and other hard-to-pronounce derivatives)

Often listed as hydroxyethyl dialidol or iminol, urea is a chemical used as a humectant and moisturizer. Dr. Bowring points out that if you can’t pronounce it, that’s usually a warning sign. “This is definitely a chemical you want to avoid in your beauty products,” she says.

3. Synthetic Fragrances

Whether labeled as perfume or fragrance, these additives are often synthetically made and can trigger scalp sensitivities. From dryness to itching and flaking, synthetic fragrances are a common culprit behind irritated scalps.

4. Polysorbates

Found in many conditioners, polysorbates act as emulsifiers and thickeners. They can be oil- or water-based but are considered toxic chemicals you should avoid for healthier hair and scalp.

5. Sorbic Acid (Sorbates)

Used as preservatives in many hair care products, sorbic acid and its derivatives are another ingredient Dr. Bowring advises skipping. While they help extend shelf life and prevent microbial growth, these compounds can be harsh on the scalp and may trigger irritation, redness, or flaking in those with sensitive skin. Over time, consistent exposure can disrupt your scalp’s natural balance, leaving hair feeling dry and brittle.

6. Certain Alcohols

Labeled as cetyl or stearyl alcohols, these can dry out your hair and scalp, making it harder to maintain moisture and healthy strands. For those already struggling with frizz, dryness, or thinning hair, these alcohols can make the problem worse over time. Choosing alcohol-free formulas can go a long way in keeping your scalp nourished and your strands smooth, shiny, and resilient.

7. Propylene Glycol

Notably, propylene glycol was named Allergen of the Year in 2018 due to widespread sensitivities. “It’s something you definitely want to be aware of,” says Dr. Bowring.

Her advice is clear: whenever possible, opt for non-toxic beauty products. “Having a clean diet, clean beauty products, and doing your best to stay non-toxic is always the goal,” she emphasizes.

By checking labels and avoiding these seven common ingredients, you can protect your scalp, maintain moisture, and support healthier, stronger hair—without the hidden toxins.
