It shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that, overall, fast food is never the best choice for your health. Most fast food menu items out there are highly processed, loaded with fat and sodium, and an all-around nightmare for your body, especially when consumed on a regular basis. However, some items are better than others. For example, while going with a healthy grilled chicken salad may be just fine for people watching their weight, many fast food meats out there are terrible for you.
To discover one of the worst fast food meats out there that you may want to avoid if you’re trying to slim down or just want to stay healthy overall, we spoke to nutritionist Lisa Richards, creator of The Candida Diet. Unfortunately for those of us who overindulged over the Fourth of July, she says that hot dogs are among the worst offenders. Learn more about the risks of fast food hot dogs below.
Health risks of hot dogs
There's no denying that classic fast food cheeseburgers like Big Macs can be just as detrimental to your health as they are delicious; they're certainly packed with consequences. However, there's another type of fast food meat you may not have considered that Richards says you should limit your intake of as much as possible if you want to keep your overall health in check: hot dogs.
"Hot dogs are considered an unhealthy fast food because they are often highly processed and made from low-quality meat, including trimmings and by-products," Richards warns. When you eat highly processed meat like this, you're putting a number of potentially harmful ingredients into your body.
"The processing involves additives, preservatives, and high levels of sodium, which can have negative health effects," she explains. "The high sodium content contributes to increased blood pressure and cardiovascular risks." Say it ain't so!
In addition to all that sodium, Richards points out that hot dogs are also typically high in saturated and trans fats, "which can contribute to weight gain, elevated cholesterol levels, and increased risk of heart disease."
The way fast food restaurants prepare hot dogs can also take a major toll on your health. "The cooking methods, such as grilling or frying, can produce carcinogenic compounds like nitrosamines, further adding to the health concerns," Richards goes on, adding that "consuming hot dogs has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers." Yikes!
All in all, any sort of processed meat is a poor choice for your health. "Choosing healthier alternatives like lean cuts of meat or plant-based options is recommended for those seeking a more nutritious fast food choice," Richards concludes. Got it.
