Foundations are meant to make your skin look brighter, clearer, and smoother. But, some foundations may be doing more than just providing coverage… some may contain toxic ingredients that are harmful to your skin.

Foundations with SPF are a game changer–they cover up blemishes while also keeping your skin safe from harmful UV rays. But, foundations with SPF may also contain a harmful ingredient called homosalate.

Homosalate is a sunscreen chemical that is often found in foundations with SPF. Sunscreen chemicals such as homosalate are "endocrine disruptors and are believed to be easily absorbed into the body," the Huffington Post reports. "They may also cause cellular damage and cancer in the body."

A huge concern with homosalate in that it may be able to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. "Homosalate and other similar chemicals seem to know the secret password to get past your skin’s guards," Goddess Garden Organics, a natural skincare and beauty brand reports. "Once in, it goes straight to your bloodstream. What’s worse is that homosalate’s invitation has a plus-one. It can take other toxins, like pesticides, in with it!"

So, does this mean you should never wear foundation with SPF? Not quite. SPF is actually really important when it comes to healthy skin and anti-aging. Opt for a natural sunscreen that you can wear underneath your makeup instead. And, as always, read the labels of products before applying them to your skin!
