When it comes to eating healthy, salads often feel like the safest bet on the menu. But not all salads are created equal—and some “healthy” picks can actually derail your weight loss progress. Packed with hidden calories, sodium, and fatty toppings, these bowls often deliver more than you bargained for. Nutrition experts warn that certain popular choices, like taco salads and other restaurant favorites, might be doing more harm than good if you’re trying to slim down.

1. Chick-fil-A's Cobb Salad

If you’ve ever glanced at Chick-fil-A’s menu and assumed the Cobb Salad is a safe, healthy choice, gut specialist Brendan McGuire says think again. Despite appearances, this salad may be doing more harm than good for your digestive system—and your overall health.

“This is the most unhealthy meal at Chick-fil-A,” McGuire says bluntly. “People look at a salad and think it’s healthy. Who wouldn’t, right? But looks can be deceiving.”

Even without dressing, the Cobb Salad with protein (like chicken or nuggets) already runs high in calories.

When you add creamy or rich dressings, the calorie count can jump even more. If you’re aiming to lose weight, consistently consuming meals with hundreds of excess calories can stall progress. It also contains 2,200 milligrams of sodium, which is nearly the recommended daily limit of 2,300 milligrams. And that’s before you even add the salad’s creamy ranch dressing.

2. Wendy's Taco Salad

Nachos become healthy when you put them in salad form, right? Uh, not exactly. A taco salad is a great example of an option that just isn't good for you, despite the fact that it has "salad" in the name. Just look at Wendy's Taco Salad, which comes in at 660 calories. Believe it or not, that's more than even the Baconator!

And if the high calorie content wasn't enough to keep you away, consider this: The Taco Salad comes in at 1820mg of sodium. That's more than you should have in a single day! You're probably better off with a burger—but Wendy's does have a few healthy-ish salads to choose from.

3. Zaxby's Cobb Zalad

Fried chicken is delicious—but it's also terrible for your health when eaten in excess. Which is why it shouldn't be surprising to hear that Zaxby's Cobb "Zalad," which is topped with their famous fried chicken, isn't exactly the healthiest meal around. On top of the lettuce and chicken, it packs in fattening ingredients like shredded cheese, fried onions, and even a side of Texas Toast.

All of this adds up to a whopping 700 calories and 1910mg of sodium, bringing you right up to the World Health Organization's recommendation of 2,000mg per day. Yikes!

4. Panera Bread Southwest Caesar Salad with Chicken

Panera may market itself as a healthier fast-casual option, but some of their salads are just as heavy as a burger and fries. Case in point: the Southwest Caesar Salad with Chicken. At 670 calories and 1,330mg of sodium, this “salad” delivers a hefty dose of calories, fat, and salt—all while disguising itself under a bed of romaine and avocado. The creamy Caesar dressing alone can tack on an extra 200 calories. While it sounds like a smart choice with lean protein and greens, the extras—like tortilla chips, cheese, and dressing—quickly transform it into a waistline wrecker.

5. Applebee’s Oriental Chicken Salad

It may be a sit-down restaurant, but Applebee’s proves that dining out doesn’t always mean healthier choices—especially when it comes to their famous Oriental Chicken Salad. With crispy fried chicken strips, crunchy noodles, and a sugary Asian-inspired dressing, this dish clocks in at over 1,400 calories and nearly 100 grams of fat. That’s basically an entire day’s worth of calories in one salad! If you’re looking to lose weight, this option can easily undo your hard work, leaving you sluggish and bloated instead of satisfied and energized.
