Onions contain compounds called fructans, and for those who are sensitive to fructans or have conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), consuming onions, especially in large quantities, can contribute to chronic bloating and digestive discomfort.

When these fructans reach the colon undigested, they become a feast for gut bacteria, leading to gas production and bloating.
