1. Lip balm with menthol
Lip balms that contain menthol may feel cooling at first, but that sensation can actually signal irritation. Menthol can be too harsh for already compromised winter lips and may trigger inflammation or dryness with repeated use. In cold weather, when the skin barrier is weaker, menthol can strip even more moisture and leave lips feeling sore, chapped, and more sensitive than before.
2. Balms with fragrance
Fragranced lip balms are a common culprit behind winter irritation because added scents and flavorings are known irritants, especially on the delicate lip skin. These ingredients can disrupt the protective barrier, leading to redness, peeling, and worsening dryness.
3. Lip balms with beeswax
While beeswax is a popular balm ingredient, it does not always work well for everyone. Dr. Sugai points out that he sees many patients who experience allergic reactions or cheilitis after using beeswax-based lip products. In winter especially, beeswax can form a stiff layer that traps irritants against the lips or prevents proper healing, and an allergy can lead to persistent dryness, redness, and cracking.
4. Lip plumping products
Lip plumping products can be a lot of fun to use and offer a bit of temporary volume, but they often rely on tingling ingredients like capsicum, cinnamon, or menthol to create temporary fullness. In winter especially (but anytime), these ingredients can irritate already dry or cracked lips, causing burning, stinging, and inflammation. The repeated swelling and irritation also weaken the lip barrier, making it harder for your lips to retain moisture and stay smooth.
5. Matte lipsticks
Matte lipsticks look chic, but they can be extremely drying in cold weather. Their long-wear formulas often rely on ingredients that pull moisture out of the lips, whole emphasizing flakes and causing tightness. Without enough hydration, matte products can settle into cracks and worsen the appearance of chapped lips.
6. Applying balm without breaks
Constantly applying lip balm without giving your lips time to breathe can make you dependent on them. Overuse can prevent the skin from naturally repairing itself, especially if the balm contains irritants or lacks nourishing ingredients. This can make the lips feel drier when the product wears off, which only make you apply it more often -- and the cycle repeats.
7. Products without occlusives
Lip products that lack occlusives do not provide the protective seal needed to lock in moisture during winter weather. Without ingredients like petrolatum, lanolin, or mineral oil, water evaporates quickly from the lips, leaving them dry and more vulnerable to cracking.
