When it comes to skincare, not everything that’s marketed as “safe” or “must-have” actually belongs on your skin. Dr. Pompa, a wellness and anti-aging expert, recently shared the three products he would never put on his skin—and the science-backed reasons behind it.
1. Conventional Sunscreen
It might surprise you, but Dr. Pompa avoids most chemical sunscreens. “Sunscreen. First of all, you don’t want to block the sun,” he explains. While sunlight has many health benefits, many sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a chemical banned in numerous countries due to its hormone-disrupting effects. His alternative? Zinc oxide for targeted sun protection—it’s safer and effective without the toxic additives.

2. Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
Despite its long-standing reputation as a moisturizer, Vaseline is a no-go for Dr. Pompa. “It feels like you’re moisturizing, but it actually causes dehydration of the skin,” he warns. Because it’s petroleum-based, it can carry toxins into the bloodstream and trap fungus and bacteria in pores, making it more harmful than helpful. For hydration, he recommends natural alternatives like tallow or coconut oil.

3. Conventional Deodorant
Dr. Pompa is equally cautious about typical antiperspirants. “Loaded with aluminum, heavy metals, and other chemicals, these products go right into your lymphatic system,” he says. Instead of blocking sweat—a natural detoxifying process—he suggests switching to natural deodorants that effectively combat odor without harmful ingredients.
Ultimately, Dr. Pompa encourages a more mindful approach to skincare. By avoiding these common but potentially harmful products, you can protect your skin, support overall health, and still maintain a radiant glow.
