We all got a little too excited about off-the-shoulder tops, huh? We raced out to buy one after seeing Olivia Palermo in them, but it didn't take long to realize that they're not comfortable--like AT ALL. And they don't stay in place--not very practical if you're more active than a store mannequin. Raising your arms has never been so hard. Also, they were everywhere fast. A little too fast. You couldn't hit a mall store or scroll through an Insta feed without seeing one. We just hit that saturation point real quick.
If you're sick to death of the trend, you're not alone. A recent Jezebel headline read "I Hate These Goddamn Tops," while Town & Country took a softer approach: "Why the Off-the-Shoulder Shirt Trend Needs to Die." And now celebrity stylists are following suit, revealing their disdain for the trend and why they wish it'd just go away. We spoke to one such stylists about why she never dresses her clients in them.
"I haven't dressed a client in an off-the-shoulder dress for a number of reasons," celebrity stylist Jeni Elizabeth exclusively told us. "I don't think they're very comfortable and you can't enjoy your evening or have fun." So true! If you don't feel comfortable in your own clothes, then what's the point?

Jeni Elizabeth also points out that there are a lot of better ways to show a little skin. "I believe there are other parts of the body, like a woman's legs or cleavage, that are sexier than the collar bone or shoulders."
So, if they're uncomfortable and not even flattering--what should we wear instead?

"It's all about the turtleneck," celebrity stylist Nicole Winston of Take 1 Thing Off tells us. "Keep the fabric light and show off those toned arms this season." Nice! Pro tip? "Pair this simple top with wide leg silk printed pants or a denim skirt and you will be sure to be on top of your fashion game this summer."
So, there you have it--two celebrity stylists have declared the off-the-shoulder dead--and told you exactly what to wear instead. Questions anyone?
