When it comes to achieving glowing, youthful skin, your skincare routine may only go so far. According to naturopathic doctor Janine Bowring, adding the right supplements to your daily routine can make a big difference—especially as you age.

“I’m often asked what are the best supplements for younger and more youthful-looking skin,” she says. Below, Dr. Bowring breaks down her top nine picks—with her all-time favorite saved for last.

1. Collagen

Collagen is a no-brainer for skin health, but Dr. Bowring recommends going a step further by choosing grass-fed, hydrolyzed bovine collagen. It’s lower in toxins like deuterium and offers a clean source of amino acids that support elasticity and hydration from within.

2. L-Lysine

This essential amino acid helps maintain the structure of collagen and supports keratin production, making it a must-have for strong hair, nails, and youthful skin.

3. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

MSM promotes proper collagen stacking, helping skin maintain firmness and bounce. It supports the formation of connective tissue and enhances the skin’s natural repair process.

4. Horsetail

This herb is rich in silica, which helps strengthen skin, nails, and hair. It also aids in skin hydration and maintaining elasticity.

5. Vitamin C

Essential for collagen synthesis, Vitamin C supports the scaffolding of collagen fibers. Dr. Bowring advises choosing a whole food-based vitamin C sourced from acerola cherries or camu camu berries, which are far more potent than oranges.

6. Zinc

Not just for immunity, zinc plays a critical role in the structure and repair of collagen. It helps maintain skin integrity and can assist in wound healing and reducing inflammation.

7. Magnesium

“Magnesium is our anti-aging mineral,” says Dr. Bowring. She recommends magnesium bisglycinate, which is bound to glycine—an amino acid that enhances skin barrier function and cellular nutrient flow.

8. Coenzyme Q10

CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant that supports mitochondrial function and protects skin cells from oxidative stress. As we age, our levels decline, making supplementation even more important for skin health and overall vitality.

9. Fish Oil (High in DHA)

Dr. Bowring’s personal favorite, DHA-rich fish oil, helps maintain skin’s moisture barrier and elasticity. “It really does help with that moisture barrier for your skin, helping to slow down those fine lines and wrinkles,” she says. Plus, it's great for eye health and brain function, too.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking to restore skin’s youthful glow, it may be time to think beyond topical products. These nine supplements can help support skin from the inside out—boosting hydration, elasticity, and overall vitality as you age.
