Remember $5 footlongs? That great deal on Subway sandwiches is definitely a thing of the past, as one customer reports that they paid $21 for a sandwich last month. This outrageous price was for a premium sub, but nonetheless, no fast food sandwich should cost $21, and other customers are calling this development “absurd” and swearing off Subway for good.

Subway isn’t the only fast food chain that’s been increasing prices within the last couple of years. McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell have all come under fire for their increased menu prices, and though many claim inflation, rising minimum wage, and increased supply costs as the reasons, they’re also reporting net income increases: McDonald’s net income increased from $1.9B to $2.3B in 2022. Something’s not adding up! Keep reading for more information.

Reddit user outraged at $21 Subway sandwich

The customer in question, Reddit user @WaldorSockBat, started a thread by saying “I bought a Subway Sandwich for 21 bucks,” adding a skull emoji for good measure. “Guess my parents were right, we do have food at home.” Other users were just as angry, and some reminisced on the good ol’ days, when a foot-long sandwich was only $5.

“Dang. I managed to get a foot-long for like $10-$11 bucks with a coupon last week,” another customer wrote. “The $5-$6 foot-long really is a thing of the past now.”

"Subway is absolutely not worth it anymore," one former-fan added. "Quality was always dubious but it managed to barely scrape by in the price-quality ratio curve. Now they are charged for them as if they were real subs and not the instant-put-together-slob with week old ingredients it really is."

"I'm shocked that so few people are talking about this," another customer said. "The recent price increases are SHOCKING. This is a scam. I'm not going to pay these new prices. I'm boycotting Subway now."

Premium subs driving up the price

Other Reddit users responded by saying that the premium subs are where the price increases are, but if you stick to a classic sub or a build-your-own, you'll be able to score a better price. "The new menu (aka: Series)," one customer explained, "all have extra cheese, occasionally extra bacon or extra avocado or extra pepperoni, which increases the price considerably.

"If you want something closer to the old sandwich prices," they continued, "don't ask for sandwiches on the new menu and you won't get those extras, which, by the way, are definitely not worth the price."

"Order the classic subs they don't advertised," another user shared. "They are nearly half the cost. I will never understand why Subway release a new menu filled with premium subs Like, I went there because it was cheap, not because it tasted great."

"If you build your own sandwich and pick only one protein, you can usually get a foot-long for around $11-$12," a third customer added. Looks like if you want a cheaper sub, you'll have to stick to classic orders...
