margarine

Margarine

If you are replacing butter with margarine, you're not doing yourself any favors. Despite being marketed as "better for you," margarine is full of trans fat that can seriously damage your metabolism.

Fox News explains, "The trans fats in the margarine can wreak havoc on your metabolism because they can lead to insulin resistance (which is when the body can’t use insulin effectively). Insulin is a hormone used in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, and insulin resistance results in slower metabolism and weight gain, especially around the abdomen, as it causes our bodies to store fat more easily."

granola

Granola

Granola is largely considered a "healthy" food and snack, but the truth is less simple.

According to Everyday Health, "Although it’s often promoted as a health food, granola is high in calories and fat, and the high sugar content in most types can spike your blood sugar and make you feel hungrier."

With that in mind, keep an eye on the nutrition label when picking out granola--or even make some yourself.

white bread

Refined Grains

Eating refined grains--like white bread, pasta, and rice--can be damaging to your metabolism. With that in mind, making sure that you are choosing healthier options (aka ones with whole grains) is a smart move.

Everyday Health explains, "Refined grains contain empty calories, lack fiber, and can cause blood sugar spikes."

protein shake

Protein Shakes

Many dieters opt for a protein shakes throughout their day, but they may not be as good for weight loss as you would think.

According to MayoClinic, you should be keeping these drinks in moderation and pairing them with exercise: "Since protein contains calories, consuming too much can actually make losing weight more difficult — especially if you drink protein shakes in addition to your usual diet, and you're not exercising."
