While there’s no single food that can guarantee you’ll live to 100, experts agree that your daily diet plays a major role in determining your long-term health and longevity. Research has consistently shown that certain nutrient-dense foods can help reduce inflammation, support heart health, and strengthen the immune system—all key factors linked to a longer life.

On the other hand, regularly consuming highly processed, sugary foods and beverages may increase the risk of chronic diseases that can shorten lifespan. We spoke with dietitians to learn which foods they recommend eating more of—and which ones to avoid—if your goal is to stay healthy well into your golden years.

Best: Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds offer a plethora of health benefits, including immune support. dietitian Lisa Andrews explains, "Nuts and seeds provide healthy fats as well as selenium and zinc." Selenium acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against free radicals, while zinc is crucial for normal immune function. For these reasons and more, adding nuts and seeds to oatmeal, trail mix, salads, or enjoying them as a snack can provide a nutrient boost that may contribute to longevity.

Best: Leafy Green Vegetables

A diet rich in vegetables, particularly leafy greens like kale, collard greens, and spinach, is a cornerstone of longevity. Andrews highlights the immunity-boosting properties of leafy greens, stating that they are "a source of potassium to manage blood pressure as well as vitamin C and beta-carotene—two powerful antioxidants to support your immune system." Incorporating greens into smoothies, stir-fries, soups, and salads ensures you receive their full spectrum of health benefits, potentially adding years to your life.

Worst: Sugary Beverages

Although they may be delicious, drinks like soda, energy drinks, and sweetened teas can be extremely harmful to your health. "These drinks are loaded with sugar, which increases the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease," dietitian Trista Best, says. All that sugar leads to a plethora of health issues, including rapid blood sugar spikes, inflammation, and weight gain. Switching to healthier options like water and unsweetened tea can help you live a longer, healthier life.

Worst: Pastries and Desserts

Cookies, cakes, and pastries may be a sweet indulgence, but frequent consumption can shorten your lifespan. These treats are often packed with refined sugars, unhealthy fats, and refined flours—all of which drive blood sugar spikes, inflammation, and weight gain. "Regularly eating high-sugar desserts increases the risk of obesity, insulin resistance, and heart disease," Best says. Choosing fresh fruit or dark chocolate in moderation offers a more nutrient-dense way to satisfy a sweet tooth.
