While some people are going to be watching the Super Bowl for the Chiefs or the Eagles, we’re just excited for Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime show and a full night of incredible celebrity commercial cameos. One ad in particular that we can’t wait to see in all of its glory is Alicia Silverstone’s in Rakuten’s Super Bowl 2023 ad. The actress donned her famous plaid yellow skirt and jacket from Clueless for the new ad.
Alicia Silverstone Re-Wearing An Outfit? As If!
Alicia Silverstone, 46, slips back into character as her Clueless character Cher Horowitz in Rakuten’s Super Bowl 2023 ad. She wore the yellow plaid suit from the movie including knee-high white socks and sky-high black heels. Silverstone styled her fabulous blonde hair down the middle and past her shoulders. And, as for makeup, she kept it simple with just a light eyeshadow tone and a pale pink lip.
Her iconic plaid separates got a makeover for the big ad, courtesy of Silverstone’s designer pal Christian Siriano (who also makes a cameo in the commercial). “Any young fashion designer watching Clueless, you kind of fall in love with the fashion,” Siriano told the New York Times. “Now, Alicia is one of my best friends.” Siriano, 37, made the iconic Clueless ’90s fit look more modern by using a different plaid pattern, ditching the cardigan, cropping the jacket, and making the pleated mini a bit more grown-up.
“I think we were really riding a fine line,” Silverstone told the Times about the updated Clueless suit. “Because everyone wants it to be this elevated, sophisticated, adult version—but then also, everyone’s totally obsessed with it staying the same.”

On Instagram, Siriano described reimagining the classic look as his “dream project,” quipping of Silverstone, “Isn’t she a total Betty?” referring to a scene in Clueless where the term “betty” means “beautiful.”
The ad for Rakuten (which gives users cash back on various purchases), features not only Silverstone reprising her Clueless role as Cher Horowitz but also Elisa Donovan returning as her frenemy and debate opponent, Amber Mariens.
“I used to be pretty Clueless about shopping,” Silverstone opens the ad, before hyping up Rakuten in a variety of settings from the movie, including her (truly iconic) rotating closet, failed driving test that ends with her crashing a car, and of course, her high school debate room. She replicates the scene from the movie where she says, “May I please remind you that it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty,” complete with chewing gum and her fluffy pink pen. The spot ends with a student, in a backward baseball cap, asking if Cher isn’t “a little old for high school.” To this, she says “What,” and winks at the camera.

Fan reactions
When Silverstone posted a teaser for the ad on her Instagram, the comments exploded with heart emojis. Many fans, however, first thought the ad was a trailer for a second movie or a spinoff tv show. One fan wrote, “I was hype for Clueless coming back lol,” and another commented, “Well this is amazing but what the world really needs is Clueless 2,” with hand clapping emojis, while another wrote, “We really need Clueless reunion.”
Fans also pointed out how little Silverstone has changed since the 1995 film. She looks the exact same! One fan commented, “Why do you still look 20!!! You’re amazing!!!!” with heart emojis while another wrote, “Vegans don’t age,” referring to the fact that Silverstone has been a proud vegan since the mid-90s.

Are Paul Rudd And Alicia Silverstone Actually Ageless?
While Silverstone may not be able to pass as a high school student, she still looks incredible for her age. And, as fans pointed out, we may not be completely clueless as to why. She’s been outspoken about keeping a vegan diet. Maybe she’s born with it—or maybe it’s an animal-product-free lifestyle.
But that doesn’t solve the mystery of Paul Rudd, 53, who looks almost exactly the same as he did when he starred as Silverstone’s stepbrother/eventual love interest in the 1995 film. The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania actor and former Sexiest Man Alive, is also starring in his own Super Bowl ad with Heinekin which will be debuting on Sunday.
While it’s not quite the Clueless reunion we’ve been waiting for, at least we’ll get to see Cher Horowitz and Josh on the big screen one more time—it’s not like either of them has aged since then!
