Your Android device should move at a reasonable pace and not stall or refuse to load pages. If your patience is wearing thin because everything you attempt to do on your device is met with a time lag, the problem may be resolved by deleting some of the apps that are causing a slowdown.

Some apps are all-consuming — meaning, they take up resources and tons of battery power on your device, to the degree that this begins to affect other things you do. When you try to download a new app, it may take forever. Uploading new iOS software may also be a painstaking process. And the list goes on.

You can help Android get up to speed by focusing on these three apps, which take, take, take from your phone and give you back a slower device.

1. Weather Apps

Weather apps may seem simplistic but they are actually doing a million things in the background that can slow down your device. These apps track your location, run in the background to check for updates, frequently send ads your way, and often feature widgets and animations that take up storage space and tax your GPU and RAM. Turning off location services for weather apps unless you’re actively using them can help, as can limiting the number of these apps on your device.

2. Phone Cleaner Apps

They seem like a net positive, but phone cleaner apps can do more harm than good. These apps often feature pop-ups, ads, and tons of promos. They often run in the background, which consumes resources, and the apps themselves can take up as much as 300MB of storage space. Finding other ways to “clean” your device, like clearing cache and using Files by Google instead can help.

3. Facebook Messenger

All social media apps can slow down your device considerably, since they are hard-working apps with tons of extra features. But Facebook Messenger may surprise you. This app also features video and voice calls, stories, games, chat bots, shopping tools, and more — all of which are considered “bloated” features. Restrict background data to keep Facebook Messenger from running in the background and consider using Messenger Lite instead.
