Everyone knows that you have to add fruits and vegetables to your diet in order to lose weight, but experts say you should also be incorporating spices into your meals as well.

In fact, one of the best spices to eat for weight loss is turmeric because of its anti-inflammatory properties and positive effect on the metabolism.

Not sure where to begin with turmeric? Why not add some to your go-to smoothie recipe? Fitness experts love the Tropical Turmeric Cleanser Green Smoothie for its anti-inflammatory goodness and metabolism-boosting ingredients.

TROPICAL TURMERIC CLEANSER GREEN SMOOTHIE

Ingredients:

2 cups fresh kale
2 cups coconut milk
2 cups pineapple
1 cup mango
Juice of ½ lemon
1 Tablespoon fresh ginger
1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 ground turmeric (to taste)
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

"Turmeric has a thermogenic effect in that it increases our metabolism.  Essentially, when you have more metabolic activity, heat is created and this heat creates faster cellular action," explains Dr. Lori Shemek, Ph.D., CNC. "This powerful spice can combat unwanted fat by helping fat cells to self-destruct through the process of apoptosis (cell death). Turmeric also has the ability to tamp down on inflammatory markers – this equates to the vicious cycle of weight gain that fat cells produce."

You can also get a daily dose of turmeric in supplement form. "Good general maintenance dose of curcumin that has been shown to be safe and effective is 10 grams each day—which is a lot! Want to super boost your curcumin? Adding piperine from black pepper increases the bioavailability of curcumin by 2,000 percent," William Cole, D.C., IFMCP says.

He also suggests adding turmeric powder to your favorite dishes to reap its metabolism-boosting benefits too!
