Coffee is a beloved morning ritual for many, but the creamers you add to your cup can make a big difference in its health benefits. Many coffee creamers are packed with unhealthy ingredients like excessive sugars, artificial flavors, preservatives, and they can contribute to weight gain, inflammation, and even skin issues. However, there are healthier alternatives that can enhance your coffee without comprising your wellbeing.

We checked in with Dr. Michael Lahey, a board-certified physician specializing in nutritional and gastrointestinal health from My Weight Loss Partner, to get tips on selecting the right coffee creamer.

“Many creamers are detrimental to gut health, leading to inflammation and weight gain when consumed in excess,” he says. But don’t worry, because “there are plenty of options that can enhance your coffee experience without compromising your health.” Read on to learn more!

1. Califia Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk Creamer

If you're looking to lose weight and achieve a slim waistline, Dr. Lahey suggests this almond milk-based creamer. “It contains very few carbohydrates, no added sugars, and minimal calories,” he notes. It's also rich in vitamin E and healthy fats, plus almond milk can also support gut health by nourishing the gut lining. This is important because many popular creamers contain ingredients that cause digestive issues and bloating.

2. Nutpods Unsweetened Dairy-Free Creamer

Made from a blend of coconut and almond milk, Nutpods is free from added sugars and preservatives, making it an excellent choice for those who don't take dairy or want to minimize inflammation. "This creamer is low in calories and perfect for anyone on a weight loss journey," Dr. Lahey explains.

3. Laird Superfood Creamer (Unsweetened)

Speaking of gut health and weight loss, this is a great option for individuals who want to have a happy gut while shedding fat. "With coconut milk and MCT oil, it not only provides a rich texture but also supports intestinal function," Dr. Lahey notes. It’s light, healthy, and a great alternative to traditional creamers packed with artificial ingredients.

4. Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer

Collagen is usually linked to skin health, but it can do wonders for gut health as it helps strengthen the gut lining. Dr. Lahey praises this creamer for its dual role: "Not only does it support gut lining, but it’s also great for skin health and contains protein with negligible sugar, making it ideal for weight loss."

5. Chobani Creamer

For those seeking a healthier alternative, Trent Harrison (@trizzlemanfitness) recommends Chobani varieties. These tasty creamers may have a similar calorie content to Coffee Mate, but the good news is that they're made with healthier ingredients. "Chobani creamers have much simpler ingredients," he says, noting that Chobain creamer is natural option compared to sugar-loaded choices. And it's still delicious!

The bottom line

Overall, if you can’t stop drinking your morning coffee, choosing a healthy creamer can make a difference. Swapping out traditional creamers loaded with sugars, artificial flavors, and preservatives for a healthier alternative is a simple step toward a more nourishing coffee habit.

Also, consider experimenting with unsweetened plant-based milks, spices like cinnamon, or even natural sweetens like stevia.
