Fermented foods are getting a lot of buzz lately for their amazing health benefits, especially when it comes to boosting metabolism and helping with weight loss. Adding these gut-friendly foods to your diet can really up your digestive game, improve how your body absorbs nutrients, and keep your gut microbiome in top shape.

We checked in with Michelle Saari, MSc, RD, at EHealth project to discover the best fermented foods that can help you lose weight faster and boost metabolism, all while providing essential nutrients and probiotics for overall well-being. She revealed that yogurt and kefir are two of the best choices. Read on to learn more.

1. Yogurt

Yogurt is rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut microbiome. A balanced gut microbiome can improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and support metabolic health, all of which can aid in weight loss.

"Yogurt, especially with live cultures, is a great source of probiotics. It's also rich in protein, aiding in muscle maintenance and feeling full. Yogurt provides calcium, essential for bone health, and has been linked to improved digestive health and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes," Saari says.

2. Kefir

Kefir is packed with probiotics, which helps keep your gut healthy and boosts digestion. Plus, its high protein content keeps you feeling full, and its vitamins and minerals support metabolic health. And the best part? It’s low in calories, making it a perfect addition to your weight loss plan.

"Kefir is filled with probiotics, which help improve gut health by promoting a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut microbiome. This balance is crucial for faster digestion and nutrient absorption. Kefir is also high in protein, supporting muscle maintenance and satiety, which can be beneficial for losing weight," says Saari.

The Bottom Line

Incorporating fermented foods like yogurt and kefir into your diet can be a simple yet effective way to boost metabolism and support weight loss. Adding these gut-friendly options to your meals is easy and versatile.

Start your day with a bowl of yogurt topped with fresh fruit, nuts, or seeds for a nutritious breakfast.

You can also blend kefir into smoothies or use it as a base for salad dressings to add a tangy twist. For a satisfying snack, enjoy a cup of kefir on its own or mix yogurt with a bit of honey and cinnamon for a delicious treat.
