In the pursuit of cognitive vitality and long-term brain health, many of us turn to various strategies, from brain games to dietary changes. However, experts suggest that another great solution could also be in your spice rack—and there are a number of brain-boosting spices that could work perfectly in your morning cup of coffee.

Dr. Brandon Crawford, a neurologist specializing in brain health and healing, recently shared his insights with us on the matter, highlighting the potential benefits of incorporating select spices into your daily coffee routine. He told us that cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, and black pepper are all great options. Here’s what he had to say about each:

1. Cinnamon

According to Dr. Crawford, cinnamon is more than just a flavorful addition to your latte; it's a potent source of antioxidants crucial for protecting neural structures from oxidative stress. "Cinnamon can also regulate blood sugar levels, which is crucial for maintaining cognitive function and preventing neurodegenerative diseases," he says. Amazing! What's more, adding cinnamon to your coffee may even be an effective way to boost weight loss.

turmeric

2. Turmeric

Dr. Crawford emphasizes the power of turmeric, thanks to its active compound, curcumin. Renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, curcumin can help reduce inflammation and oxidative damage in the brain—factors often linked to conditions like Alzheimer's disease. "Curcumin also boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain," Dr. Crawford explains. This will add an earthy flavor to your coffee that's definitely worth a shot.

ginger

3. Ginger

When it comes to anti-inflammatory spices, you can't go wrong with ginger. "Known for its potent anti inflammatory properties, ginger can help improve cognitive function by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress," Dr. Crawford tells us. "It also aids in neurotransmitter balance, which is essential for focus and cognitive agility." (P.S. ginger and turmeric go great together.)

nutmeg

4. Nutmeg

There's nothing like a bit of nutmeg during the colder months—and luckily, this warm spice also comes with health benefits. Dr. Crawford highlighted nutmeg's neuroprotective properties, which can enhance memory and prevent the degeneration of neural pathways. "Nutmeg also has mood-boosting effects, which can contribute to a more focused and positive mental state," he notes. Perfect!

black coffee

5. Black Pepper

Don't knock it 'til you try it! Black pepper could not only add a unique flavor to your morning cup of joe, but it also comes with substantial benefits in the realm of brain health, especially when paired with turmeric. "Piperine, the active compound in black pepper, can enhance curcumin absorption (from turmeric) by up to 2,000%," according to Dr. Crawford. "This synergy not only amplifies the benefits of curcumin for the brain but also helps in improving digestion and nutrient absorption, indirectly supporting cognitive health," he reveals.

The bottom line

Incorporating these spices into your daily cup of coffee may offer more than just a flavor boost; it could provide a significant cognitive boost and contribute to long-term brain health. Whether sprinkled directly into your brew or blended into your favorite coffee-based recipes, these spices offer a delicious and potentially beneficial addition to your morning ritual. (Much better for you than many harmful coffee ingredients.) So, the next time you reach for your coffee grinder, consider reaching for the spice rack as well—it could be the secret ingredient your brain has been craving.
