Making changes to your life that can benefit your brain becomes increasingly important with age. As you get older, a number of factors can contribute to cognitive decline, but luckily, there are many things you can do to prevent this, including adding brain-healthy foods to your diet. And what better time to fuel your brain than first thing in the morning, with an antioxidant-packed breakfast? There’s one superfood in particular that can take your first meal of the day to the next level: berries.
We spoke to health experts Lauren Thayer, registered nurse, and Krutika Nanavati, registered dietitian, to learn more about the incredible benefits of berries. They told us that this fruit can do wonders for your brain, especially when it comes to keeping your memory sharp. Read on for all of their expert insight.
Benefits of berries for memory
Berries don't just taste great. They're also fantastic for your health. In addition to aiding weight loss thanks to all the fiber they provide, they can also improve cognitive functions like your memory.
Thayer told us that blueberries, in particular are a great choice. "Blueberries deliver anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects," she says. "Antioxidants act against both inflammation and stress, both of which can contribute to brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. They can also help improve communication between brain cells."
Nanavati seconds this. "Studies have shown that blueberries can have a positive effect on brain function and memory, and may even improve cognition and delay cognitive decline," she says. According to her, some studies even suggest that "the flavonoids found in blueberries can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, allowing them to directly affect the center of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Consuming blueberries regularly may help prevent memory decline associated with aging and enhance overall cognitive function." Incredible!
Luckily, blueberries are as versatile as they are healthy. "They can be added to oatmeal or yogurt at breakfast, blended into a smoothie, or eaten as a snack," Nanavati suggests.
Thayer also recommends adding some blueberries to a bowl of Greek yogurt, which offers up a great amount of health benefits on its own. No matter how you consume them, though, your brain will certainly thank you!
