There are a lot of reasons to eat oats in the mornings. They’re easy and time-efficient to make, plus they’re a great base for just about any types of foods or flavors you’re in the mood for. And fitness trainers tend to agree.

“Oats are a low-calorie and high fiber food,” NYC certified fitness trainer Jessica Mazzucco told SheFinds. “Oats help lower harmful cholesterol levels and regulate the sugar level in your body. The best reason for choosing oatmeal is its high fiber content. Fiber takes time to get digested, allowing you to feel full and satisfied longer. Thus, you will be less prone to eat again real soon.”

And Mazzucco gave us her recipe for healthy berry oatmeal that only needs three berries.

To make Mazzucco’s healthy berry oatmeal recipe, you will need one cup of whole milk, one cup of old fashioned oats, one cup of frozen berries, a quarter teaspoon of vanilla extract, a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of salt. That means that this delicious and sweet recipe doesn’t include any added sugars!

Mazzucco said that you can also top your oatmeal with any additional fresh berries of your choice, like raspberries or blackberries, as well as vanilla yogurt, crushed hazelnuts, sliced banana, and/or a tablespoon of maple syrup.

“You will need to mix berries, cinnamon, salt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and oats over medium heat. Then crush the berries, turn the heat to low, cover, and let the mixture cook for five more minutes,” Mazzucco told us. “Lastly, pour your oatmeal into a bowl and top with additional berries, nuts, and vanilla yogurt.”

Mazzucco did not specify which three berries to use in your oatmeal, but we recommend a combination of strawberries, blueberries and raspbrries.

Strawberries are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, while blueberries have been known to promote younger-looking skin and raspberries are rich in potassium and omega-3. Not to mention these three berries taste very good together.
