I’m a bit late to the game, but I just discovered that tucking a crisp white tee into high-waist jeans or a silk midi skirt, for lack of a better word, lit.
Apologies if I just revealed my own age by using the word “lit” in late 2019, but since it’s out there, yes, I’m 34. And, no I can’t believe that I’ve spent this much time on the earth without knowing that a good white t-shirt can be worn to work or even a night out if you’re lucky. What have I been doing all these years?
Let me tell you, this best-kept fashion-girl secret is that you can wear a cotton t-shirt and make it fashion. It’s so easy to pull off—but you just need to have the right white tee. Here’s what I’ve recently discovered that is in my thirty fifth revolution around the sun:
Best White T-Shirt
To start, not all white tees are created equal. I’m not suggesting that you go home and turn any cotton bed shirt into a date night outfit. To truly master the white-tee-tucked look you’ve got to have one that is crisp, not see-through, has fitted sleeves, the perfect neck hole and a fitted silhouette than can be tucked under without forming clumps. If it sounds like the holy grail, that’s because it is.
And I know, because I’ve attempted the look many times in my life but did not successfully execute it once. For years, I’d grab one of those loose, drape-y tees made popular in the early aughts and half-tuck it into skinnies. The look was always casual and sometimes even cool–but never fashion.
Then, while outfit stalking on “Like to Know It” (because how else do we figure out how to wear new clothes?), I came across Uniqlo’s crew neck short sleeve t-shirt.
This is it. This is the shirt.
I won’t bury the lede–I ordered the t-shirt (or rather, I received a free one to review for the site) and it was everything that other t-shirts I’ve tried were not. Fashun, hunni!
This revelation is apart of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, that they have decided to carry forward to fall. And with good reason–because it is, hand’s down, the world’s best white t-shirt.
First, and foremost, it’s reasonably priced. It costs exactly $14.90, which is just a few dollars more than those 3-pack tees you can buy at the drugstore, and it shows.
Uniqlo’s take on the classic looks and feels so much more expensive than they are. It makes you wonder why we live in a world where the $100 designer t-shirt even exists.
Secondly, I don’t know what they’ve done with the fabrication, but the shirt is thicc to the point that it will absolutely never be see-through. (I dare you–enter that white t-shirt contest.)
The thickness also means that the shirt is always crisp and fresh as a daisy, and never looks sloppy. You can wear one and it doesn’t look lazy or phoned-in. You can even wear it to work and your boss will not fire you for it (don’t quote me on that!!).
UNIQLO always slays basics, but 2019 is really their year. You’re doing great, sweetie!
