Makeup can be a powerful tool for enhancing your features at any age, but as your skin changes over time, so should your makeup techniques—especially when it comes to blush. After 40, the wrong blush color, formula, or placement can unintentionally add years to your appearance. What once gave you a youthful glow might now settle into fine lines or drag your features downward. Knowing how to choose and apply blush correctly can lift your face, brighten your complexion, and help you look more radiant and refreshed.
Erica Taylor, a makeup artist & educator for over 25 years, shared the simple blush mistake that is “dated” and making you look “plain crazy.” Read on to learn more!

Dont: Use A Big Brush
Using a big blush brush might seem like a time-saver, but it can actually age your face if you’re over 40. Larger brushes tend to apply blush too broadly, which can drag the face down instead of giving it a lifted, youthful look.
Do: Erica recommends using a small brush and forming a peace sign shape on your face by imagining a line from the corner of your eye to the top of your ear. Apply the blush within that V-shaped area using the small brush for a more lifted, youthful look. “Blend this out, and you have a perfectly lifted blush application,” she says.
The bottom line
Everyone's facial structure is different, so it's important to learn what works and doesn't work for your face as you age. Some other blush mistakes that could be aging you are:
Applying blush too low on the cheeks: When blush is placed too low, it can drag the face down and emphasize sagging. Instead, apply it slightly higher on the cheekbones to give a lifted effect.
Using overly shimmery or glittery formulas: While a bit of glow can be flattering, heavy shimmer can settle into fine lines and draw attention to texture. Opt for satin or cream finishes for a more natural, skin-like radiance.
Last but not least, don’t skip blush just because you’re older! As skin loses color with age, skipping blush can make the complexion appear washed out. A touch of well-placed color can instantly bring life and vibrancy back to the face. Avoiding these mistakes and adjusting your technique with age can make a big difference in achieving a more refreshed, timeless appearance.
