It’s easy to reach for that satisfying load of carbs in the morning to fill you up on the go, like that warm, doughy bagel with a thick cream cheese spread...

But did you know the tasty combination can contain up to 350 calories alone? And it may be doing no favors to your waistline. Bagels can cause you to gain weight because they are high in calories and low in minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Without fiber, the carbs in your bagel digest quickly and turn into sugar — which often turns into fat. So unless you plan on hitting the gym right after your morning chow down, you’ll likely retain the extra pounds.

But if you just can’t seem to let go of your morning bagel, we’ve got some good news for you. Next time you’re craving one, opt for a mini or whole wheat version (or a combination of both!) to drastically cut your intake of calories and carbs.

Switching to a mini bagel can save you up to 200 calories per day, which can translate into losing 24 pounds over the course of a year! Pairing it with a non-fat cream cheese that is high in protein and low in fat can further boost your weight loss. And even with this lighter option, you won’t have to worry about leaving the house hungry. “You’ll be surprised by just how satiating a smaller option can be, especially when paired with a great protein source like Greek yogurt or a hard boiled egg,” says Liz Vaccariello from Reader’s Digest.

Whole grain options will also double the health benefits, as they’re packed with essentials vitamins and minerals. But don’t assume that a whole wheat bagel contains whole grains, however. Unless your bagel is made with 100% whole-wheat flour, you’ll be eating a standard bagel. As with any type of food, know your ingredients!
