It’s no secret that fast-food restaurants don’t offer as great, cheap prices as they used to, and some Burger King customers are fed up with the increased cost of simple food items and ingredients.

Recently, a post made by an angry Burger King customer went viral after they were told by their local restaurant that they’d have to pay an extra $1.20 to add cheese to their Whopper sandwich. The Whopper, made famous by the fast-food chain, had always required consumers to pay a little more for cheese on it, but now, the dramatic price hikes at several locations have former fans slamming the restaurant as a ‘scam.’ Read more about the controversial restaurant below.

A Reddit User's Post Goes Viral After They Were Charged $1.20 To Add Cheese To A Whopper At Burger King

The Whopper is a legendary fast food item that has been sold at Burger King since the late 1950s, making it a solid choice for burger fans for decades. Its claim to fame was its flame-broiled beef patty, which, at the time, was significantly larger than the burgers sold at fast food establishments. While Burger King may not be considered the most popular fast food chain out there, the brand and its Whopper sandwich are still considered a favorite for many American customers.

However, recent price hikes caused by inflation and other economic circumstances have hit Burger King and numerous other fast food brands, which has led to disappointment and frustration among customers. Reports from MoneyGeek show that 'BK' has increased the price of its items from 2022 to 2024 by 12.3%, with the average cost of a meal going up to $10.61.

Most fast food stores try to keep their price increases relatively under the radar so as not to alarm fans, but when a recent Burger King customer saw that they'd have to pay a lot more for cheese on their burger than usual, it sparked a heated conversation online. A Reddit user recently shared that they noticed they would have to pay an extra $1.20 for cheese on a Whopper at their local Burger King, causing other users to weigh in on the price hikes they've seen at their local restaurants.

"$1.20 to add cheese to a Whopper is a scam," wrote the Reddit poster.

Although cheese has always cost extra at Burger King, the price varies at store locations, and some states have seen larger hikes than others for the added ingredient, like the Reddit poster.

Internet Users React To Higher Prices At Burger King

After the Reddit post about the expensive cheese on a Whopper went viral, other customers and consumers began weighing in on the matter and expressing that they miss the days when fast food burgers were the times being sold for a dollar versus a slice of cheese.

"BK is weird with prices to add cheese," wrote a Reddit user.

"At my store, it's a dollar to add it to a Whopper or 30 cents to add it to a Rodeo Burger," they continued. "It's American cheese for both, so shouldn't it be the same price? Even if the Whopper got two slices, it's still an overcharge."

"It's 90 cents where I'm at, but it's still absolutely overpriced," contributed another user.

"I refuse to spend nearly a dollar on something that should only cost a few cents."

Many Burger King and fast-food customers commented on the Reddit post that they'd order a Whopper without cheese and add a slice of their own cheese at home to save a bit of money. However, many agreed that the entire situation felt like a "scam," as they felt they shouldn't have to pay for the cheese at all. One user wrote that the extra charge on cheese was "more like a rip-off."

Since Burger King makes an additional profit from added cheese to their signature sandwich, we doubt they'll take off the extra cost anytime soon, but they may see a dip in consumers if they continue to raise the price on the simple burger ingredient.
