It’s no secret that inflation has been taking a toll on all of our wallet’s lately. From Sam’s Club memberships to Pumpkin Spice Lattes, it seems there’s really nothing that has stayed as cheap as it was a few years ago. Even fast food, which is meant to be a cheap, quick fix for when you need a meal on the go, has been skyrocketing in price—including menu items at Burger King, especially when it comes to certain locations.
One Reddit user recently called attention to the higher prices in LA with a thread on the Burger King subreddit, in which they begged the question: ‘Why Are Los Angeles Burger Kings So Expensive?!’
Burger King Prices In Los Angeles
In a photo they posted of the drive-through menu, prices do seem to be a bit steep. A Whopper, for example, costs a whopping (pun intended) $7.19 on its own, with a combo taking it to $10.69. Chicken Fries seem to be the cheapest possible option, with 9 pieces costing $5.59, or $9.09 for a combo.
It's worth noting that this post called out Los Angeles Burger King's in particular. And, let's be honest, L.A. isn't known for being an affordable city. For a comparison, one customer located in Wisconsin noted that an Impossible Whopper in their era was only $6.69, while the L.A. menu prices the sandwich at $8.19.
However, many jumped in to say they've seen similar prices across the country. "That's how much they are in Florida," someone confirmed, with another chiming in: "That's just Burger King in general my dude. I worked at one in Michigan and the prices weren't much lower. Maybe like 1.50 less if even. And that was like 3ish years ago. Its probably even closer now."
According to one commenter, the UK is also experiencing some hikes in price. "I work in an English BK and prices recently went up for us," they wrote. "Honestly surprised we get so many customers. Almost £3 Just for some fries is ridiculous."
Inflation At Burger King
Of course, there's one simple explanation: "Everything is expensive. It’s called inflation," someone wrote. One user confirmed that it all adds up when you consider the inflation rates: Whopper meal 22 years ago was 5.50. based on inflation, it would be about 9.50 USD. Sounds about right," they wrote. Of course, that doesn't make anyone any happier.
"First gas prices, NOW MY WHOPPER," one commenter joked.
Many people pointed out that using the mobile app will always get you the best deal. "Use the app. There’s always deal. I never buy Burger King off the menu," someone said. So, when in doubt, pull out your phone and order ahead of time to save a few bucks and earn some points. However, while you'll still get a better deal this way, one comment points out that they've also seen an increase in the app prices. Will we ever get a break?!
Los Angeles or not, looks like we should unfortunately all be prepared to spend a few extra dollars on our trip to the drive-thru.
