One major iPhone charging mystery that never seems to be cleared up is the question of whether you should charge your iPhone overnight and allow it to reach 100 percent battery charge.
With past iPhone models, it was determined that overcharging your battery led to trickle charges, which can generate heat and slowly cause your phone’s battery to deteriorate. Since no one wants the burden of having to replace their battery or phone so often, the old advice was to never charge your phone for long periods of times. But does that advice still hold water?
According to one tech expert, that isn’t the entire story anymore. Here’s the best way to charge your phone for maximum battery longevity.
Modern iPhones Are Different
Old advice about charging doesn’t really apply anymore to modern iPhones, according to tech experts who say our current devices are “smarter” than that. Our newer phones will actually stop charging the battery once the charge reaches 100 percent. They’ll then only continue to charge once the battery drops a little below maximum.
But even though you won’t ruin your battery by charging your phone overnight, there is a better way to charge your device.

Keep Your Battery in the Sweet Zone
Keeping your battery in the sweet zone of between 20 and 80 percent can help maintain your battery for longer. This can be achieved with shorter charging sessions that are spaced out a little less than you might normally power up your device. This puts the least strain on your battery.
Another smart tip is to enable Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone. This setting learns your charging habits and adjusts how quickly it charges the phone’s battery so that it doesn’t leap to 100 percent, but gets there gradually. To enable this setting, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Optimized Battery Charging.
