Chrissy Teigen is known for being seriously funny on Twitter and being the best mom to kids Luna and Miles. And while she loves to joke around, she’s also not afraid to get real with fans and share her experiences that include scary and sad moments in her life.
In a recent interview with Marie Claire for their fall 2020 issue, the 34-year-old model stripped down to her true authentic self to reveal a heartbreaking racist experience she has shared with husband John Legend.
Even as celebrities, Teigen and Legend’s privileged lives face racism. Teigen shared that she and her singer-songwriter hubby were followed and harassed by “neighborhood-watch-type” white men in Virgina about a decade ago.
“We were in a nicer neighborhood at night, driving slowly, looking for John’s godmother’s home. These two guys were in a pickup truck slowly tailing us, flashing their lights and trying to speak to us,” Teigen shares with Marie Claire. “When we pulled over, they were like, ‘What are you guys looking for?’ and we gave them the address. They literally said, ‘Get your asses out of here!’ and proceeded to follow us all the way into her driveway. They got out of the car and stared at us as we knocked on the door and went inside. It was a terrible, scary experience.”
Teigen, who has a Thai and Norwegian background, saw and experienced the type of racism 41-year-old Legend has faced before, she admits.
“That was my first taste of seeing what happens to Black men everyday,” Teigen tells Marie Claire. “It was horrifying and could have gone wrong so quickly. I was sobbing afterward for hours, and I noticed John wasn’t emotional about it. Seeing that he wasn’t very thrown by it was really upsetting because he obviously had experienced it before.”
The mom-of-two took to Instagram on Sept. 8 to share her Marie Claire fall 2020 cover and revealed even more struggles that she was going through behind-the-scenes of the photoshoot.
“I did this cover a couple days out of surgery, the one I was pregnant for all along. I was so so so scared the aggression on my body took a toll on the baby and just mentally came to terms with it “not working out”,” Teigen captioned her post. “ It had never worked out naturally before so for sure it wouldn’t now! On top of that, I was struggling hard with some deep dark internet/real life days.” How heartbreaking is that?!
