And cigarette jeans and pants seem like the perfect meet-in-the-middle solution, meaning they could be the silhouette of the season for good reason!
Cigarette pants get their name from their slim, straight-leg cut that tapers slightly at the ankle, resembling the shape of a cigarette. They first became a style staple in the 1950s and ’60s thanks to icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, before resurging in the ’80s on stars such as the late Princess Diana and Cindy Crawford. While they were once synonymous with classic elegance, the cut eventually fell out of favor, often criticized for being unforgiving and unflattering on many body types, or because they were somewhat tricky to style.
That said, cigarette pants are now having a major comeback, and most people seem to be here for it! Jennifer Lopez famously wore a pair of cigarette jeans back in 2024, but sparked mixed reviews online, with some critics calling them ill-fitting and unflattering. However, many other A-listers are proving just how effortlessly chic the trend can look, especially with today’s modern updates: softer denim, stretchier fabrics, and tailored cuts that bridge the gap between skinny jeans and straight-leg trousers.
