Coffee drinks made with syrup at both popular spots like Starbucks and Dunkin’, as well as mom and pop coffee shops, are generally quite damaging to your health, they warn. They may add flavor, but coffees made with syrup add a lot of health risks, too. “Avoid flavored syrups in your coffee as they are widely sweetened with corn syrup that drives blood glucose way up causing weight gain,” Dr. Sera Balderston, DOM, of Integrity Health Corporation tells us.

“Foods with added simple sugars may give you an initial energy surge, but they will likely cause an energy crash later in the day,” Stephanie Hunter, M.Ed, Nutrition Education, CHES® and Coach Project Coordinator at Noom agrees This is because simple sugars are digested by the body quickly, and they will not serve as an energy source in the longer term.
