Costco Customers Rant About Their Produce On Reddit

Recently, a Costco-themed Reddit post went viral after a disappointed shopper asked if they were the only one who thought their produce from the mega-retailer went bad in a "couple of days."

It started a heated conversation that several other customers contributed to, leading to nearly 300 comments and stories about buying rotten or near-rotten produce at Costco. Costco is known for buying items in bulk, which is why it shouldn't be much of a surprise that not all of their perishable items, like produce, can last long or be 'perfect.' However, it's still very frustrating for those who spend their money on produce at the retailer, especially if it's the place where they do all of their grocery shopping.

"Costco is a mass merchandiser; their supply chain isn't designed for produce," wrote a Reddit user. "It might be sitting in some distribution center for a few days before getting to your store."

"I never had good luck with their produce, especially their garlic," added another.

"I would get home, and within 3 days, most of them were completely rotten. I love Costco, but I will not buy produce from them."

One Costco member shared a photo of some gnarly-looking rotten clementines that "went bad" in less than two days.

Another shopper said they bought a pumpkin from Costco to make fresh pumpkin soup, but that things quickly went downhill.

"It went bad in 24 hours," they recalled. "It had turned soft and was oozing out liquids below it."

"I learned this lesson recently," commented another customer.

"Purchased a bag of cucumbers, squash, and corn. I tried to eat the cucumbers the next day, and half the bag was rotten. Later, I open the corn, and it stinks."

Shoppers Say They 'Never' Buy Produce At Costco Anymore

All of the incidents with rotten produce at Costco, or produce that goes rotten quickly, have led many store fans to stop buying it altogether.

"I never buy produce there if I'm not going to use all of it within three days," wrote a Reddit user.

"That's one thing I'll never buy at Costco," added another.

Some Costco shoppers in the Reddit thread noted that while the fresh produce may be a total hit or miss depending on the store location, their selection of frozen fruits and vegetables is trustworthy, especially since you can purchase large quantities of them.

"I've gotten super into their frozen fruit," commented a customer.

"The frozen organic blueberries are great."

"I buy more frozen fruit and veggies at Costco since I can only eat so much in a week," another customer wrote.

If you're a Costco customer struggling to keep your produce from the mega-store fresh, you're certainly not alone, and hundreds of people share the same irritating experience.

"I have almost given up buying Costco produce," wrote a disappointed customer.

"I get better and longer lasting from the grocery store. How much am I saving buying bulk if I end up tossing more than half because it went bad?"
