When it comes to our skin, we ten to zero in on fine lines, breakouts, or dark spots—without stepping back to consider the bigger picture. When our complexion isn’t cooperating, it’s easy to blame genetics or chase the latest miracle product, assuming the solution lives in a serum or treatment alone. But gorgeous, healthy skin isn’t the result of just one thing. It relies on multiple factors working together, from the products you use (and the ones you wisely avoid) to how well you sleep, how you manage stress, and how consistently you support your body from the inside out.

Diet plays a major role in that support system, but it’s not just about what’s on your plate. What you drink matters just as much—sometimes more—when it comes to skin health. Certain beverages can sabotage your glow by dehydrating your skin and disrupting its natural balance, even if the rest of your routine is on point.

According to dermatologists, there are a few common drinks that are especially harsh on your skin’s moisture levels, making them worth a second thought if a healthy, radiant complexion is the goal.

1. Soda

Soda is one of the most deceptively dehydrating beverages for your skin, mostly because of its high sugar content and, in many cases, caffeine. Excess sugar can trigger inflammation and glycation, a process that breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to dullness and premature aging. Caffeinated sodas act as mild diuretics, encouraging fluid loss, while the sodium and phosphoric acid found in many sodas can further disrupt your body’s hydration balance. The result is skin that appears drier, less plump, and more prone to breakouts and uneven texture over time.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol is a well-known diuretic, meaning it causes your body to lose more water than it takes in—and your skin is often the first place this dehydration shows up. When you drink alcohol, it suppresses an antidiuretic hormone, leading to more urination and a drop in overall hydration levels. This loss of water can make skin look dull, accentuate fine lines, and compromise the skin barrier, leaving it more vulnerable to irritation and redness. Alcohol also increases inflammation and can dilate blood vessels, contributing to puffiness, broken capillaries, and flare-ups of conditions like rosacea.

3. Sports Drinks

While sports drinks are marketed as hydrating, many can actually work against your skin when you consume them on a regular basis. They often contain high levels of sugar and sodium, which can pull water away from skin cells and promote inflammation. Without the significant sweat loss they’re designed to replace, these ingredients can disrupt your body’s natural fluid balance rather than support it. Over time, frequent consumption may lead to dehydration at the cellular level, contributing to dryness, congestion, and a dull complexion.
