In the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, detoxification has become a buzzword, often surrounded by myths and misconceptions. Christa Biegler, RD & nutritionist, sheds light on the reality of detox scams, dispelling the notion that fancy teas or elaborate cleanses are the key to a successful detox.

Contrary to popular belief, Biegler advocates for simple, everyday actions that can contribute to a more effective and sustainable detox. This approach challenges the prevalent misconceptions surrounding detoxification and highlights the importance of daily practices for improved well-being.

Biegler, who carries a following of over 136K on her Instagram page, specializes in gut health, skincare, and enhancing food sensitivities, as well as promoting energy and focus without excessive restrictions. Recently, she posted a chart on her account that contrasts common misconceptions about detox with the factors that truly support the detoxification process.

Detox Realities

On the left side, she notes that things such as juice cleanses, dandelion tea, colon cleanses, clay/charcoal, salt/salt soaks are the things people “think” detoxing is about. On the right side, she notes what can actually support detoxification: adequate protein intake, reduced environmental toxin exposure, supported elimination: bile, urine, sweat, and stool, eating a wide variety of whole foods, and adequate mineral status.

To clarify her chart, she says, “I’m not disregarding any of the modalities above! It’s just the fact that most people think that doing one juice cleanse/year is the holy grail of detox or doing one random salt soak will be a detox game changer. Detoxification is something that can constantly be supported. And it doesn’t necessarily need to involve fancy teas or cleanses but instead simple everyday actions that can support your liver’s health, gut’s health, skin’s health, etc.!”

For enhanced support in your detoxification journey, she recommends to begin by integrating suggestions from the list on the right side provided above! She also says that some lesser known things when it comes to detoxing your body includes: Less trash in, more trash out figuratively when it comes to your health, adequate amino acids, wide variety of whole foods to support biochemical processes, movement & sweat, healthy air, proper bowel movements, genetics (PON1, CYP family, MTHFR, etc), and last but certainly not least, eliminating toxic beliefs & people; whatever that may mean to you!
