Melania Trump’s self-titled documentary has received mixed reviews, with most of the positive reviews coming from women with an average age of 70 years old. While the documentary is set to earn between $16-20M in theaters, that doesn’t necessarily mean the film was a win for Amazon MGM Studios. Rather, because of the high price tag to acquire the film, Amazon is walking away with a near $40M deficit.

Despite this, President Donald Trump is calling his wife a “movie star,” while social media users call the entire operation a disappointing attempt at grifting. Keep reading for more information.

Donald Trump Calls Melania Trump A 'Movie Star' After Documentary Flop

During a recent speech made during the Board of Peace event in Washington, DC., Trump called his wife a "movie star" as a result of her documentary. "She has a very successful move out right now, like number one," Trump said. "Can you believe this? Big movie star, and I always say it's trouble, because I always say there's not room in one family for two stars. I told her that we can't have two stars in one family, so I don't know what that means. It's not good." He also called the documentary "the biggest-selling documentary in 20 years."

Despite the gross prediction of $16-20M, Amazon has no reason to be celebrating. In addition to the fact that theaters get to keep roughly half of ticket sales, the production studio paid $40M to acquire Melania and a follow-up docuseries AND paid $35M for marketing as well. However, many social media sleuths think this was a strategic acquisition for Amazon, and not one led by dollar signs, in order to cozy up to the current administration.

Social Media Reactions

Across social media platforms, users let out their frustration at the pointless distraction from actual politics at play, like the Epstein files and wars overseas. "Are we tired of this grifter yet?" one person asked on X, formerly Twitter.

"This documentary is two things, and neither are a look into the behind the scenes of the life of a First Lady," another user wrote. "This was an attempt at a distraction from the Epstein files and a bribe from Amazon to the Trump administration. Pathetic."

"I love that he can't even promote his wife's new documentary without bringing himself into it," another person posted.

"I am so tired of hearing about this ridiculous documentary," a final user wrote. "Everyone knows they paid the old folks homes to drop their residents off at the movie theater to sell them out."
