What Is The Keto Diet?

“When your body is in a state of ketosis, the liver produces ketones which become the main energy source for the body,” states the website.

The Keto Diet is said to deliver quick weight loss results by using the body’s own fat-burning system where results can start to appear in as little as 10 days.

The Problem With The Keto Diet

So, what’s the problem with this speedy weight loss diet? Some critics say it doesn’t actually work for long-term results and can even cause muscle loss.

While participants of the Keto Diet can see rapid weight loss in just a couple of weeks, many clinical reviews say the extremely low-carb diet is only effective for short-term fat loss.

“For starters, most of the lost weight is water weight,” Lisa Cimperman, R.D.N., a clinical dietitian at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, told Healthline, “Once your body enters ketosis, you also begin to lose muscle, become extremely fatigued, and eventually enter starvation mode. Then it actually becomes even harder to lose weight.”

Many nutrition experts only recommend the Keto Diet for people who are obese or extremely overweight and looking to see drastic results. It should also only be used for short periods of time and under professional supervision.
