Remember back when 90s ‘it girl’ Drew Barrymore, 46, and Luke Wilson, 50, were one of the coolest early aughts celebrity couples? The Santa Clarita Diet star just revealed some new details about their whirlwind romance!
On her self-titled talk show, Barrymore recently invited special guest (and longtime friend) Kate Hudson, 42, to join her on stage. The two chatted about the night they first met in the early 2000s and how Barrymore was then in a non-traditional relationship with the younger famous Wilson brother.
“When we first met, we were young and wild,” said Barrymore, to which Hudson replied, “I think it was at a bar/restaurant … Chez Jay’s in Santa Monica, with Luke [Wilson].” They noted to the audience that The Royal Tenenbaums actor introduced the two of them in 2003, when Barrymore was dating him and Hudson was filming the 2003 movie Alex and Emma with him.
Barrymore then smiled and recalled that she and Wilson were in an open, non-exclusive relationship at the time. “I was dating him, but I think he was also dating other people,” she said, and added, “It was an open relationship— we were young.”
Hudson, who dated Owen Wilson, 53, then said with a laugh, “I’ve been there with a Wilson too.” As fans remember, Hudson previously dated Luke’s older brother Owen on-and-off after the two starred in 2006’s You, Me and Dupree together.
Barrymore also then said that she looks back at that time happily, reminiscing an era that was “low stakes” and a time for many learning experiences in her love life and career. “We’re just young, we’re having fun, we’re all playing, acting, hanging out. You’re not taking it all so seriously, and it was fun and we had the best time,” she said.
Both Barrymore and Hudson have since moved on from the Wilson brothers, and seem to have fun reminiscing on old times and their past love lives together. The two continued to prove why their friendship is so lovable during Hudson’s appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show as Hudson remembered feeling “starstruck” to meet the Donnie Darko star. Barrymore, in turn, said she always loved Hudson’s 2000 SNL impression of her.
So cute to see them together and hear their stories!
