The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were just released, and it has caused quite a storm of media attention, namely because while Ryan Gosling was nominated for his performance as Ken in Barbie, neither Margot Robbie nor Greta Gerwig were nominated for Best Actress or Best Director. While Eva Mendes is busy celebrating her man and calling out critics, Ryan Gosling has released a statement criticizing the Academy for snubbing Margot and Greta. Keep reading for more information.
Back when it was first announced that Ryan Gosling had landed the role of Ken in Barbie, there were quite a few critics. Now that he’s landed an Oscar nomination, those critics are eating their words, but Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, is not letting them forget what they said. Mendes posted screenshots from a Rolling Stone article titled, “Sorry to Be the One to Say It, but Ryan Gosling Is Giving Major Cringe as Ken in ‘Barbie'” where its author, Tomás Mier, had some pretty mean comments about Gosling’s new role.
“But on Wednesday,” the article reads, “Warner Brothers released the first look at Ryan Gosling as Ken. And it’s giving full camp, full cringe.”
“We’re already lining up therapy appointments for the nightmares this is sure going to give us,” the article continues.
“La La Land homeboy looks like one of those creepy, older West Hollywood men who still think they’re in their 20s,” Mier said. “But honestly, it’s probably the blonde hair: it’s just that bad.”
Well, Mier is certainly regretting his statements now. Eva posted these screenshots with a caption cheering on her husband: “So proud of my man. So much hate when he took on this role. So many people trying to shame him for doing it. Despite all the #Notmyken ridicule and articles written about him, he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking, now iconic character and took it all the way to Oscars.”
“So beyond proud to be this Ken’s Barbie,” she said.
