Jennifer Lawrence: Eating Appetizers

Going out to breakfast is a luxury in our world. But celebs don’t have desk jobs and can easily ignore their kitchens. Jennifer Lawrence has a trick when she selects from the menu: she orders two appetizers instead of starter and main. This smart lady is utilizing portion control to ensure she doesn’t overeat. Presentation plays a big role in portion control - people like to see food cover an entire plate. It just looks “right”. And then you polish off a giant plate of food. “Choosing smaller plates and bowls for serving meals and snacks can help keep portions in check,” says Jenna Amos, a registered dietician with siggi’s yogurt. Another trick from Stephanie Perruzza, a registered dietician at KIND Snacks, is to compare portions to recognizable objects. She says 1 cup = the size of a tennis ball, 1-ounce of cheese = the size of a domino, 3-ounces of protein (like meat, fish, and chicken) = a deck of cards. We can totes do this!

Gwyneth Paltrow: Hot Water & Lemon

When we wake up we head straight to the coffee maker. Not Gwyneth Paltrow. She preps a mug of hot water with lemon. A warm or hot beverage gets your body moving at a rapid pace. That means your entire body is engaged in creating and using energy that leads to weight loss. That’s metabolism in a nutshell! Experts have not found any faults with drinking hot water with lemon. It’s healthy, has zero calories and spurs your metabolism to get moving. Lemon has vitamin C to aid weight loss. A study found that people who have sufficient levels of vitamin C intake burned more fat than people who were C deficient. Plus all of that water keeps you hydrated and feeling full.

J.Lo.: Grapefruit Oil

We wash our hands before we eat. J. Lo takes a whiff of grapefruit essential oil prior to meals. Yes, there is an idea floating around that smelling grapefruit and other scents can suppress your appetite. According to a study at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, people who sniffed the aroma of green apples or bananas when they were hungry ended up eating less and losing weight. Experts believe it has to do with tricking your brain into thinking you’ve already eaten. Aromatherapy is certainly therapeutic and there are smells that help us relax. But as a long-term diet aid, we don’t think so. Hey, if you want to sniff grapefruit oil before heading out to dinner, then have fun. But you also need to make real changes to your lifestyle if you want to slim down. Start simple: commit to dropping all processed foods for one week and see how much better you feel. Or think about having half a grapefruit with breakfast: it has anti-inflammatory properties that promote fat burning.

Jessica Alba: Coconut Water & Machta

Here’s a simple smoothie recipe: coconut water, a banana and machta. It’s not surprising the mind behind The Honest Company would enjoy a clean, organic drink to start her day. Jessica Alba was wise in choosing these ingredients. Coconut water contains as much sodium-bloat fighting potassium as a banana. So this drink has double! It’s also a delish way to stay hydrated. When you don’t drink enough water and become dehydrated it could cause your metabolism to become sluggish. Machta is a super potent, specially harvested, and most pure of pure version of green tea that comes in a powder form. Green tea contains the compound EGCG, a catechin, which shines as an anti-inflammatory superstar thanks to its proven effects on a wide-ranging spectrum of conditions and diseases. It also has the ability to raise your metabolic rate, too, allowing you to burn more calories.

Kourtney Kardashian: Ghee

If you have no idea what ghee is, you’re not alone. We had to ask the experts to clue us in. Ghee is clarified butter. That mean’s it’s been heated and purified until all that is left is the natural butterfat found in milk. It’s been a part of traditional Indian cooking for ages but is picking up steam in celeb circles as a path to weight loss. Kourtney Kardashian takes a teaspoon of ghee each morning, melts it and then drinks it (followed by a glass of water). Ghee has some interesting things going for it. It’s a natural fat, which is a good thing. It contains vitamins A, E and D, all of which are fat-soluble, meaning they need to be taken with fat to be absorbed into the body. This is where the potential anti-inflammatory and weight loss promoting effects are found.
