5 Hair Mistakes Women Over 40 Should Stop Making This Autumn Because They Make You Look Older

Autumn is the perfect time to rethink your hair routine. Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and a wardrobe shift toward richer colors and cozy layers can inspire us to make a few changes to our cut, color, and styling habits, too. But some of the hair choices we’ve relied on for years may not be doing us any favors. Certain techniques can leave hair looking flatter, drier, or more dated, which can unintentionally emphasize signs of aging rather than highlight your features.

There’s no rule that any woman over 40 has to follow when it comes to styling her hair—and looking younger should never be anyone’s goal. But if you’re hoping for hair that feels fresh, flattering, and healthy this fall, a few simple updates can make a big difference. From overly severe cuts to color and styling mistakes that rob hair of dimension and movement, here are five habits worth reconsidering this season.

1. Going Too Dark

Deep brunette and black shades can be gorgeous, but an extremely dark, one-dimensional color may create a harsher contrast against the complexion, particularly if your skin tone has changed over time. That doesn’t mean you have to go blonde or abandon the dark hair you love. Subtle highlights, balayage, or a few slightly lighter pieces around the face can add dimension and soften the overall effect while allowing you to remain firmly in brunette territory.

2. Going Too Long Between Trims

Skipping trims for months at a time can leave even a great haircut looking a little worse for wear. Split, thinning ends can make hair appear less healthy and full, while an overgrown shape may drag down your features instead of framing them beautifully. You don’t need to constantly chop off length, either—a light “dusting” every couple of months can remove damaged ends, restore your cut’s shape, and help hair look bouncier and more polished.

3. Overusing Hot Tools

A curling iron or flat iron can be incredibly useful, but relying on high heat every day can eventually leave hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage—and damaged hair can look less shiny and vibrant. This can become especially noticeable as hair naturally grows drier with age. Try lowering the temperature, always using a heat protectant, and giving your hair occasional air-dry days. You may find that embracing a little natural texture actually makes your hair look softer and more youthful.

4. Using Heavy Products That Weigh Hair Down

Rich oils, creams, and conditioning products can make dry hair feel wonderfully soft, but using too much—or choosing formulas that are too heavy for your texture—can leave strands limp and roots looking flat. This can be particularly frustrating if your hair has become finer with age. Try concentrating richer products on the mid-lengths and ends and opting for lightweight volumizing formulas near the roots. The goal isn’t to use less care on your hair, but to give it moisture while preserving its natural movement and bounce.

5. Wearing Hair Flat and Lifeless

There’s nothing wrong with sleek, straight hair, but when hair sits completely flat against the scalp without movement or shape, it can sometimes have an aging effect. Hair also tends to become finer or lose some density with age, making a lack of volume more noticeable. A few face-framing layers, a root-lifting product, a change in your part, or some soft bends through the lengths can create movement without requiring a dramatic new hairstyle.
