Dealing with hair shedding and thinning can be so frustrating—especially when it feels like more strands are ending up in your brush (or your shower drain) than staying on your head. Whether it’s hormonal changes, stress, aging, or just the way your hair is, watching your ponytail thin out is never a good time. While there’s no overnight miracle for fuller hair, many of us are turning to natural treatments for support, and hair oils are high on the list. Oils have been used for centuries to nourish the scalp, strengthen strands, and add shine. Oils like rosemary, castor, and argan have gotten major attention lately, and for good reason: they’re loaded with nutrients that can help create a healthier environment for hair to grow.

But before you reach for the nearest bottle of oil and start layering it on, it’s worth knowing that not all hair oils are created equal, and how you use them makes a big difference. For example, rosemary oil is loved for its scalp-stimulating properties, castor oil is great for thickening—but very sticky—and argan oil is perfect for smoothing dry ends—all can be effective, but not all are good options for your scalp and hair. Choosing the right oil for your hair type and goals is a smart move, but equally important is knowing how to apply it correctly. Before you break out that bottle of oil, here are two common hair oil mistakes that you should never make because they can actually make shedding worse.

Mistake 1: Not Washing Out the Oil Thoroughly

Leaving hair oil in your hair without properly washing it out might seem harmless—or even beneficial—but it can actually do more harm than good. When oil builds up on your scalp, it can clog hair follicles, trap dirt, and mix in with dead skin cells, which creates a poor environment for hair growth. This buildup can lead to inflammation or scalp irritation, which weakens the hair at the root and can actually increase shedding. If you’re applying hair oils consistently and notice your hair feeling heavy or limp, and your scalp feeling itchy or greasy, it could be because you aren’t properly and thoroughly washing all of the oil out of your hair.

To avoid this, make sure you're washing out the oil properly—especially if you're using heavier oils like castor or coconut. One quick rinse usually isn’t enough. You might need to shampoo twice (a technique called "double cleansing") or use a clarifying shampoo once a week to fully remove any residue. If you’re short on time, try applying oil an hour or two before your shower rather than leaving it on overnight. That way, your scalp gets the nourishing benefits without the lingering buildup that can weigh your hair down or cause fallout over time.

Mistake 2: Applying Too Much Oil to an Already Oily Scalp

If you naturally have an oily scalp, piling on even more oil might feel like a good idea, but It can easily backfire. Overloading an already oily scalp with more oil can throw off your scalp’s natural balance and cause it to go into overdrive, causing it to produce even more oil. This can lead to clogged pores, buildup, and eventually, inflammation—all of which can contribute to increased shedding and slower hair growth. Basically: don’t suffocate your scalp with more oil if it’s already oily in nature.

That doesn’t mean you can’t nourish your hair and scalp if you have an oily scalp. Instead of focusing on your scalp, apply oil treatments on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair rather than the roots. Less is more when it comes to keeping an oily scalp and hair happy.
