As summer approaches, our desire to change up our hairstyles can also accompany the warmer weather and time spent outdoors. If your hair is thinning or has areas of sparseness at the crown or other areas of the scalp, you may find it more challenging than ever to find a haircut or hairstyle that suits you and makes your hair look its best. But you don’t need to bend over backwards to look and feel great. Sometimes, all it really takes is knowing which haircuts and styles to avoid in order to make the most of what you’ve got.

Everyone is different. One or more of the styles on this list may be your go-too — and you may strongly object to how it adds to your appearance. It’s important to always follow your instincts when it comes to your hair. You know what’s best on you. But, if you feel like something is amiss with your hair and you can’t put your finger on it, one of the problems may be that these cuts, hair colors, and styles don’t do justice to thinner or more mature hair. Some stylists recommend avoiding these nine hairstyles and haircuts because they are outdated and unstylish.

1. Very Blunt Haircuts

Blunt haircuts and thinning hair — it’s complicated. On the one hand, a blunt bob or lob can actually make the ends of hair look denser and thicker, which is a win. But they may also leave your crown appearing flatter, and that defeats the entire purpose of your cut. If you find a blunt cut isn’t hitting the mark for you, it could be because a few additional longer layers will add movement and body that truly help make your hair look its healthy best.

2. Chunky Highlights

Chunky highlights are wide highlights that are usually several shades lighter and brighter than the rest of your hair. This is a distinctive look, for sure, but it’s becoming a bit outdated as more subtle highlights and minimalist overall color become increasingly popular.

3. Extreme Single-Process Hair Color

In more uncertain economical times, many people start to watch their beauty and personal care budget. It’s no surprise then that extreme single-process hair colors are less popular at the moment (they require more frequent upkeep and maintenance, and that cost adds up). Selecting natural shades can help cut down on that cost.

4. Extreme Stacked Bob

The stacked bob isn’t out of style — all bobs are popular at the moment. But extreme layering is taking a backseat to more subtle, strategic layering approaches. Keep the stacked bob, but tone down the super-short layers.

5. Long, Flat, One-Length Hair

It’s hard to part ways with long hair, especially if you’ve been a fan of longer lengths for most of your life. You don’t have to crop your hair short the day you turn 50 (this is a myth), but many women find it easier to maintain a somewhat shorter cut that doesn’t fall flat at the roots or become straggly at the ends. Long, flat, one-length hair is usually not as easy to maintain as a cut that reaches around the shoulder or slightly longer.

6. Heavy, Blunt Bangs

Bangs that are thick, heavy, and blunt can appear severe and square in shape, which in turn does the opposite of soften your face and features. These bangs are also not the best for thin or fine hair because they pull too much from your hair, leaving it looking thinner. If you love bangs, try a wispier, more texturized bang instead.

7. Perms

Perms that produce tight curls have long been replaced by myriad tools that create looser curls and waves. Some don’t even require chemicals or heat — they give your hair automatic texture and body, without highly stylized curls.

8. Asymmetrical Bob

Think beyond the asymmetrical bob to consider chic haircuts with an edge that are a little less expected. For example, you can ask your stylist to give you an asymmetrical pixie, bixie, or even a curly asymmetrical bob that shows why this cut is so gorgeous on more than one hair type (straight).

9. Slicked-Back Styles

This season’s updo is a little looser and casual, with shorter layers and tendrils left to fall where they may. Slick-back styles that use lots of gel and hairspray feel a little old — park them for now and try something elegant and imperfect.
