Hair Pros Share The 3 Hairstyles To Retire For Women Over 50 Because They Add Years To Your Face

Not all haircuts are created equal—especially when it comes to how they frame your face. The right cut can lift your features, brighten your expression, and create the illusion of higher cheekbones and a more defined jawline. But the wrong cut can do the opposite, by pulling the eye downward and emphasizing heaviness or length where you don’t want it. Because hair sits so close to the face, its shape, length, and weight play a powerful role in how youthful (or tired) your features appear.

While hairstylists don’t always agree on trends, techniques, or the “right” length for everyone, many agree on this point: certain haircuts consistently work against a lifted, youthful look.  If your goal is a fresher, more energized appearance, these three haircuts are worth considering retiring.

1. Blunt Bob

While a blunt bob can look chic and modern, it isn’t always the most flattering choice for mature hair and faces. The sharp, heavy line at the ends tends to draw the eye straight across the jaw, which can emphasize sagging or softness rather than lift the face. On finer or aging hair, the lack of layering can also make strands look flatter and less dynamic, especially around the face. Without movement or face-framing softness, a blunt bob can create a boxy effect that weighs features down instead of refreshing them.

2. Long Hair with a Flat Crown

Long hair isn’t inherently aging, but when it’s paired with a flat crown, it can pull features downward and make the face appear longer and more tired. Without lift at the roots or layers through the top, the weight of long hair drags the eye down, emphasizing heaviness in the lower face and neck. On mature hair, which may already be finer or thinning, a flat crown can make the entire style look limp rather than polished. If you choose to have long hair, consider face-framing layers.

3. Too-Short Pixie

A very short pixie cut can be striking, but when it’s cropped too close to the head, it often removes the volume and softness that help mature faces look lifted. Super-short lengths leave little room for shape or contouring, and this can accentuate hollowness in the temples or emphasize fine lines around the face. With less hair to balance facial features, the overall effect can feel stark rather than youthful, especially if the cut lacks texture or length at the crown and front.
