Not all hats are created equal, which makes online shopping for them a bit of a challenge. Whether your head is the size of an apple or a watermelon, everyone struggles with finding the right hat fit online based solely on measurements and a photo. Check out these tips before you stock up on sunhats or fedoras to make sure you’ll get the best fit when your online order arrives.

Measure Your Head

Step one is to know exactly what measurements you need for your hat. Instead of trying to wrap a tape measure around your head and looking like an idiot, use a piece of string. Position the string on your head wherever the hat would sit, so above your ears and around the middle of your forehead. Wrap it around your entire head tightly, but not too tight. You don’t want your hat to get stuck on your head! Cut the string and measure it against a ruler or measuring tape.

Consider Your Face Shape

Every hat is different, and so is every face shape. Some hats might look better on you than others depending on the shape of your face. If the photo of the hat online has someone modeling it, take a look at the model's face shape for inspiration. If your face is small, steer clear of wide-brimmed hats. For longer faces, look for hats with medium sized brims.

Compare It To Similar Hats

So you think you've found the cap of your dreams online? Before you hit buy, take a look around for similar hats from different stores online. Compare the measurements and the material to other similar hats. Your dream hat could look deceiving in the photo, so check the measurements against the photos and measurements of other hats. Once you're sure the original hat is the one for you, then you're ready to buy. But do your research first.

Read The Reviews

Reviews of a product are like the Holy Grail of online shopping. Even though you're placing your trust in random strangers from the Internet community, take their reviews to heart. If someone says the hat runs small, you better believe it. Happy online hat hunting!
