Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day as it kickstarts your metabolism, providing the necessary energy for the day’s activities. A well-balanced breakfast sets the tone for a day of healthy eating and can positively impact overall metabolic function. On the other hand, incorporating healthy fats into your breakfast can help you feel fuller for longer, reducing the likelihood of overeating later in the day. Surprisingly, certain healthy fats have been shown to have a positive impact on metabolism.

We spoke with Meagan Murphy, RDN, LDN, to learn about the one healthy fat you should add to your morning meal because it can boost your metabolism. Murphy revealed that avocados are a great addition to your breakfast for metabolism and beyond. Read on to learn more.

Avocados

Avocados are a nutritional powerhouse renowned for their myriad health benefits, including their potential to boost metabolism. Packed with healthy monounsaturated fats, avocados provide a sustained source of energy that can enhance metabolic function. These fats are not only heart-healthy but also contribute to a feeling of satiety, reducing the likelihood of overeating.

Murphy first starts by making it known that "metabolism is how our bodies turn food into energy, [so] the rate of someone’s metabolism is determined by age, lean body mass, biological sex, hormones, and physical activity. Unfortunately, there isn’t a single “superfood” that can speed up metabolism, [but] healthy fats can increase and sustain satiety which can lead to fewer calories eaten throughout the day."

Benefits Of Avocados

She noted avocado's key benefits which is linked to its satiety. "For example, avocados are fatty acids, fiber, and water which can help you feel fuller longer, and help aid in overall fat loss from a calorie deficit," she notes.

To give it a good boost of protein, Murphy recommends "Avocado toast topped with a hard-boiled egg for protein," as part of a balanced approach to including this green fruit into your breakfast routine.

The fiber content in avocados further supports digestion and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels, preventing energy spikes and crashes. By incorporating avocados into your diet, you not only enjoy a delicious and versatile food but also harness the potential to promote a more efficient metabolism and overall well-being, opposed to sugar-laden breakfasts with empty calories.
