Fruits, nature’s colorful and delicious bounty, are celebrated for their rich nutritional content, providing an array of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that contribute to overall health. However, it’s important to be mindful of the sugar content in certain fruits, as their natural sugars can impact weight management when consumed excessively. While fruits offer numerous benefits, some varieties, often referred to as high sugar fruits, can lead to an unintended increase in caloric intake and, consequently, weight gain.

We spoke with Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, LD to learn about the one high-sugar fruit that may be the cause of weight gain. Sabat revealed that bananas are the fruit you should stay away from as much as you can. Read on to learn more.

Bananas

Bananas, a beloved and convenient fruit, offer a host of nutritional benefits, including potassium, vitamins, and dietary fiber. However, their sugar content, primarily in the form of natural fructose, has led to discussions about their potential impact on weight gain. While bananas do contain natural sugars, they are also rich in fiber, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and promote a feeling of fullness, potentially curbing overeating.

"A medium-sized banana contains about 105 calories on average. If you consume multiple bananas throughout the day without considering the calorie content, you might end up exceeding your daily caloric needs," Sabat warns. She also explains how simple sugars play a factor. "Bananas contain both simple and complex carbohydrates, with a significant portion being natural sugars like fructose, glucose, and sucrose. These sugars can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, followed by crashes, which can trigger hunger and overeating."

The Bottom Line

Consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet, bananas are unlikely to contribute significantly to weight gain. However, like any food, excessive consumption can lead to an increased caloric intake, which may contribute to weight gain over time. Ultimately, incorporating bananas into a well-rounded diet while being mindful of overall calorie intake is key to enjoying their nutritional benefits without adverse effects on weight management.

"If you enjoy bananas or other high-sugar fruits, incorporating them into a balanced diet in moderation can be part of a healthy eating plan. Monitoring portion sizes, paying attention to hunger and fullness cues, and maintaining an active lifestyle are all crucial in managing weight effectively," Sabat notes.
