1. Start slowly

First and foremost, Brown says it's important to start slowly and build up your endurance and stamina over time. As he advises, “You can start by walking and gradually incorporating short bursts of running into your walks.” This will help you build up your strength and conditioning without overwhelming your body.

2. Take breaks

It's also important to listen to your body and take breaks when you need to. “In fact,” Brown says, “It’s important to listen to your body and take breaks when you feel tired or sore.” Above all, remember not to push yourself too hard, especially in the beginning. Taking breaks when your body tells you that it needs them will help prevent injuries and ensure that you're able to progress at a sustainable pace. Eventually, you’ll be able to go longer!

3. Wear the right gear

In addition to starting slowly and taking breaks, it's also important to invest in the right gear–especially when it comes to your running shoes. These are a must! “Invest in a good pair of running shoes and make sure they fit properly,” Brown urges. “Wearing the right gear can help prevent injuries and make your runs more comfortable.” Although a good pair may be pricier, the difference they’ll make in the long run (no pun intended) will be well worth it.

Overall, remember that it’s never too late to start your fitness journey and hit the road! As you start running over 50, though, keep in mind that it may take some time to build up your endurance and reach your goals. Be patient with yourself and focus on making small, consistent progress each day. With a little dedication and perseverance, you'll be well on your way to a healthier, more active lifestyle.
