Cinnamon

Move over, sugar. There’s another sweetener in your pantry that tastes just a little earthier and wholesome and works great in coffee: cinnamons. Granted, cinnamon isn’t quite as sweet, we’ll give you that, but it has myriad health benefits that include the ability to help lower your blood sugar levels and lose weight.

This powerful spice, which comes in two varieties: sweeter ceylon and less sweet cassia, is the topic of several studies, thanks to suspicions that it can help with a number of health issues.

In one study, small amounts of cinnamon were found to lower glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes, as well as lower the amount of bad cholesterol in the body.

As it turns out, it doesn’t take a lot of cinnamon to make a positive impact on your health.

"I like the fact that the amount that showed benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol in that study was 1 to 6 grams, which is the range of half-teaspoon to three teaspoons, or one tablespoon, so it's easy to sprinkle on cereal or in yogurt or use in recipes," registered dietitian Lisa Drayer, who writes about nutrition for CNN, told CNN. The Food and Drug Administration's recommended limit is 6 grams a day, according to CNN.

In other words: more cinnamon in your coffee won’t be beneficial — but a sprinkle is just perfect (and perfectly healthy).

Cinnamon contains some of the same antioxidants you’ll find in foods like blueberries and dark chocolate — and these anti-inflammatories have been found to help at the cellular level in studies involving rats and mice. Just a dash of cinnamon in your coffee may protect your body against Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer, diabetes, and liver disease, according to CNN.

And, considering how there is a link between inflammation and obesity, having another anti-inflammatory ingredient added to your coffee can actually help you lose weight.
