Experts Share 8 Items To Avoid Purchasing At Walmart Due To Health Concerns And Better Deals Elsewhere

Walmart is known for its low prices, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every item on its shelves is the best value—or the safest choice. While the popular superstore offers everything from groceries to furniture and health products, experts say there are some purchases that may end up costing you more over time due to quality concerns, durability issues, or even potential health risks.

With that in mind, we asked shopping and health experts which Walmart items are worth leaving out of your cart—and what to buy instead. From vegetables linked to the recent cyclospora outbreak to items that simply don’t deliver on value, find their warnings below.

1. Store-Brand Packaged Greens (Marketside)

Store-brand products often provide excellent value, but packaged salad greens should be purchased with a lot of discretion amidst the cyclospora outbreak.

Jessica Rice of Budget Bytes points out that Walmart's Marketside salads are supplied by Taylor Farms, recently linked to the parasite.

"Taylor Farms supplies and packages store-brand greens for major national retailers," Rice explains. "When stores issue a recall or quality hold for their store-brand produce, it is frequently supplied by Taylor Farms and goes to Marketside (Walmart)."

That doesn't mean every package is unsafe, but you should always stay informed about current recalls and health news.

2. Pre-Cut Fruit And Packaged Salad Mixes

Convenience comes at a price, both financially and sometimes from a food safety standpoint.

Fruit is one of the best things to add to your diet, and you may not always have the energy to chop it yourself. But Clay Cary, Senior Trends Analyst and Finance Expert at CouponFollow, recommends buying whole produce instead whenever possible.

"There are some costs to convenience. Fresh pre-cut fruits have a limited life and there have been multiple food safety recalls related to pre-cut produce in recent years. It is less expensive per pound and lasts longer to purchase whole fruits and vegetables," he says.

Whole fruits and vegetables generally stay fresh longer, reduce packaging waste, and often cost significantly less per serving.

Affordable furniture options

3. Budget Furniture

That cheap bookshelf or dresser may seem like a bargain, but Cary says shoppers should think beyond the sticker price.

"Though prices of furniture at Walmart are attractive, many entry level furniture items have no durability whatsoever," he warns. "Furnishing an apartment where you are going to live for several years requires more sturdy furniture which would allow you to save more in the long run."

If you're furnishing a long-term home, investing in higher-quality furniture could save money in the long-run.

Generic batteries on display

4. Generic Batteries

Store-brand batteries can work well for low-drain devices, but Cary says they may not be the most economical choice for electronics you use every day.

"The quality of store brand batteries may be enough for powering low drain devices," he says. "However, batteries for electronic devices used daily might fail quite fast and the frequency of replacements would actually increase your expenses. Thus, it is worth spending a bit more on branded products."

Rechargeable batteries or trusted name brands may provide better long-term value if you're powering game controllers, cameras, or other frequently used electronics.

Budget kitchen appliances

5. Super-Inexpensive Small Appliances

Low prices are tempting when you're shopping for kitchen gadgets or household appliances, too, but again: durability matters.

According to Cary, "Small home appliances can be very cheap, however, they are also among the least durable products. Checking reviews before making purchases would help you to avoid buying an appliance which is likely to break in a couple of months."

Reading customer reviews and comparing warranty coverage can help determine whether an appliance is actually a bargain or simply inexpensive upfront.

Aisle of supplements in Walmart

6. Dietary Supplements

Not all supplements are created equal.

Cary advises shoppers to be especially selective when purchasing vitamins and supplements. "Unlike prescription medication, dietary supplements are not subject to rigorous regulation and thus their quality could vary greatly. The products of well-known brands which spend money on independent testing are worth the investment in comparison with generic ones."

The FDA notes that dietary supplements are regulated differently than prescription medications, making third-party testing and manufacturer reputation important factors when choosing products.

True Metrix glucose monitors on display

7. Some TRUE METRIX Glucose Meters

Dr. Dorothy Ogwuru, MD, says shoppers should verify that any TRUE METRIX, TRUE METRIX AIR, TRUE METRIX GO, or TRUE METRIX PRO glucose meter includes the updated instructions before purchasing, as this product was recently recalled.

"The FDA has classified this as a Class I Recall," she explains. "The main concern is that the meter's E-5 code can represent a very high glucose level (greater than 600 mg/dL) as a reading or a malfunction in the test strip. Confusing one for the other can lead to significant and dangerous delays in treatment."

She adds that people who already own one of these meters should continue using it while following the FDA's updated guidance.

Holiday decorations available at Walmart

8. Holiday Decorations At Full Price

Sometimes, you can save a lot of money by waiting until after the holidays to purchase certain holiday decorations. Stock up for next year early!

According to Cary, "Holiday decorations are one of the easiest purchases to postpone. Walmart offers huge discounts on holiday inventory right after holidays, so planning ahead allows customers to save up to 50% of costs on next year's purchases."

If you have the storage space, buying decorations immediately after the holidays can stretch your budget much further than shopping during peak decorating season. Perfect!
