Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most well-known and well-loved actresses in Hollywood, but she too is only human. The 62-year-old recently revealed that she has just celebrated 22 years of sobriety after her addiction came to a head at the age of 40.

In an interview with Variety in 2019, Curtis shared that a friend walked in on her during her nightly ritual of swallowing five Vicodin pills with a side of wine. But even then, the actress admitted, she was not prepared to kick her addiction. It was only after she read an article in Esquire titled, “Vicodin, My Vicodin,” that she realized she was not alone and decided to seek help.

After that article, Curtis attended her first recovery meeting and began her journey towards sobriety. Opening up to Variety, Curtis revealed that she never took the drugs while she was working, saving the high for the evening. “I was the wildly controlled drug addict and alcoholic. I never did it when I worked. I never took drugs before 5 p.m. I never, ever took painkillers at 10 in the morning. It was that sort of late afternoon and early evening — I like to refer to it as the warm-bath feeling of an opiate,” she said.

However, it wasn’t just Vicodin that she struggled with--drinking was another issue that Curtis has managed to keep at bay for the last 22 years. “For me it’s a hybrid because I also drank too much in a very controlled way, in a very Jamie way. It is the only disease that is self-diagnosed. No one else can actually tell you you’re an alcoholic. They can tell you that you drink too much or in their opinion that you drink too much or that when you drink too much, it really makes them angry. But to call yourself an alcoholic or a drug addict is a badge of honor,” she shared.

Fortunately, Curtis has been able to successfully battle her demons, recently revealing, “With God’s grace and the support of MANY people who could relate to all the ‘feelings’ and a couple of sober angels...I’ve been able to stay sober, one day at a time, for 22 years.” That’s no small feat!
